WINTER IS COMING
TIPS TO PREPARE YOUR HOME FOR THE COLD SEASON
As days grow shorter and temperatures drop, it’s time to take the necessary steps to winterise your home. With a little planning and preparation, you can create a cosy and efficient living space that can withstand Cape Town’s famous wet and windy winter conditions.
Insulate Windows and Doors
Inspect your windows and doors for any gaps or cracks that allow cold air to enter and warm air to escape. Cape Town's winter winds can be chilly, so sealing these is essential. Apply weather strips or caulking to seal any leaks and save on heating costs. Additionally, consider using thicker curtains or window film to provide an extra layer of insulation.
Service Your Air Conditioners and Heaters
Before winter arrives, schedule a professional inspection and maintenance service for your air conditioners and have all gas and electric heaters checked for faults. This will ensure optimal functioning and reduce the risk of unexpected breakdowns.
Insulate Pipes and Water Systems
While Cape Town doesn't experience extreme winter temperatures, it's still important to protect your pipes and water systems. Insulate exposed pipes in areas like garages and lofts using pipe insulation. Use a geyser blanket to insulate your geyser and save on heating costs.
Clear Gutters and Downpipes
With frequent rainstorms to be expected, proper maintenance of your gutters and downpipes is crucial. Clear any debris or leaves from gutters to ensure proper water flow and prevent water damage. Install gutter guards or gutter foam to minimise clogging and check that downpipes are directing water away from your home's foundation to prevent dampness and flooding.
Protect Outdoor Areas
Clean and cover outdoor furniture to protect it from rain and wind. If you have a swimming pool, use a pool cover to reduce evaporation and maintain water temperature. Additionally, trim any overhanging tree branches that could potentially damage your property during heavy rainfall or storms.
Prepare for Loadshedding
With loadshedding already at Stage 6, it is crucial to be prepared for long periods, often up to 12 hours, without electricity. Change bulbs and downlighters to rechargeable versions, and ensure that rechargeable LED lights are kept charged, flashlights have new batteries and gas tanks are filled to account for increased usage of gas heaters and stoves.
Maintain Roof Integrity and Insulation
Winter in Cape Town can bring occasional storms and heavy rainfall, so it is best to regularly inspect your roof for any damaged or loose tiles and have them repaired or replaced promptly. Address any leaks or signs of water damage to prevent further issues, and ensure that the loft is well-ventilated to prevent condensation and potential mould growth. If budget allows, add insulation to your ceiling to prevent heat loss and minimise heating costs.
Add Extra Touches of Comfort
Create a cosy atmosphere by switching out bright lighting for low, warm LED lighting; add throws, wool blankets and cushions to living spaces and bedrooms; and invest in winter sheets which are made of heavier fabrics, and add a feather or down duvet and cushions.
