This might seem like something to put off, but it might be what you need to do right now. There are many reasons besides retirement why you would want to move. For instance, a better school district or suburb. You may even need a smaller home or financially you feel your bond repayments are too high, and you can no longer afford to live in your present home.
Whatever your reasons are, we've got a few tips on downscaling:
Location, location, location
When looking for a neighbourhood to settle in, let your non-negotiables lead you to find the area you would like to move to. A good starting point would be to consider property growth for the suburb as well as the local schools and general conveniences such as grocery stores and cafés.
Functional minimalism
The space you choose to live in will be smaller in size than your previous home. When viewing places make sure that the space is functional and that you can add furniture that acts as storage too. The space should preferably have a lot of natural light and perhaps a balcony or a little garden for your early morning coffee or tea.
Decluttering
Label everything in your home, either keep or throw out. Now, this is not the time to hold onto unnecessary stuff. Get rid of those things and then start to go through what you deem a necessity to live.
Decluttering your home is important as it allows potential buyers to picture what it would be like to make it their home.
